Artist Info: Jill Storthz
Bio
Born: Little Rock, Arkansas 1978Statement
These drawings are influenced by the visual and emotional landscape of the place I live. I discovered this when I moved to San Francisco from Chicago. Much like my new home, the lines of my work have become softly curved and less harsh, less severe, less tense. At first, I feared I had lost the edginess that defined my work. But I realized change is not always easy, and some seven years later I happily encompass flowers and feather dwellings, spirits and missions, indians, birds, and shapes. In these drawings you will find a splintered ramshackle quality entwined with colored light, earth, and space.
I use sharp calligraphy pens to create these drawings, They are like knives, in the way they slice across the paper. I love the thick heavy black ink that stains the paper - a permanent possibility. Throughout all of this creating, I have found that, every so often, it turns out alright.
Thank you for looking and taking the time to read my attempt to explain these drawings.
